Heart Healthy Diet

You are what you eat! The development of coronary artery disease and the chance of having a heart attack are related to your food intake.

The optimal diet for the prevention of heart attacks is a plant based whole food diet that is rich in fruits and vegetables (at least ten servings a day), low glycemic and high in fiber.

High fiber foods: are foods that have not been processed such they still maintain the outer husks of the grains such as whole grain bread, brown rice and whole wheat pasta.

Do not eat, white rice and pasta, cakes, cookies, candies, fried food, donuts and potato chips.

Do not drink sodas, fruit juice and avoid juicing. No energy or sports drinks, Drink water mainly and green tea cold or hot.

Animal protein should be avoided that is no red meat, chicken, turkey, fish or pork.

No dairy products: cream, butter, cheese and ice cream.

No oils!

If you feel that you cannot give up animal protein then red meat should be once a month, poultry and fish one meal a week. Use Olive oil sparingly and cheese weekly as well.

The time to feast on a regular American high fat diet is on special occasions- holidays and birthdays! That's about 5- 6 times a year! Thanks Giving, your birthday, wedding anniversary and two other special days a year.

Vitamin supplements and fish oil capsules are not recommended. If you desire to take fish oils then a prescription capsule is available. Otherwise vitamin supplements are not beneficial. On the above diet you will be getting all your essential nutrients as whole food.

There are rare instances where there is a documented deficiency: Vitamin B12 and vitamin D supplementation is required. See the attached food pyramid for guidance. McDougall.com Reference: The China Study for more information.
